Ingredients
- 1¾ tomatos Tomatoes
- 40 g Toor dal
- 60 g Basmati rice
- 1½ tsp Ghee
- ½ tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1¼ tsp Black pepper
- 2 g Curry leaves
- 1 tsp Asafoetida (hing)
- ¼ tsp Turmeric
- 1¼ tsp Tamarind paste
- 4 g Coriander
- ¼ tsp Salt
Method
- Simmer the toor dal with the turmeric until soft, then mash it loose with its water.
- Soak the tamarind in warm water, squeeze it out and discard the solids.
- Simmer the tomato in the tamarind water with crushed pepper and cumin for ten minutes, until the tomato falls apart.
- Add the mashed dal and enough water to make it broth-thin. Bring it just to the point of boiling and take it off - rasam should never roll.
- Temper the mustard seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida in ghee, pour over, and serve with the rice.
